F.A.Q.

WHAT ARE WE COVERING?

If your existing tattoo is very old or faded, or has little colour, you have a wide choice of designs. If the design is bold, bright or has strong lines, you'll need to be more selective.

We will not take on cover-ups if we are doubtful about what can be achieved.  We need to ensure that the new tattoo is MUCH better than the old one and that we'd be happy for you to walk around telling people we did it.  If we're happy to put our names to it, you can be assured that you'll be happy with it too.

So we will sometimes refuse cover-up jobs because either the cover-up is impossible (e.g. covering up large black tribal or lettering) or because the customer is putting too many restrictions on what we are allowed to do.  By this I mean customers who want a tricky cover-up but will not pay for the time needed, or will only consider designs that we think will not work.  This protects us from being forced to put out poor work and protects the customer from making another mistake.  It may sound arrogant but we do know best - it's our job.

If we do refuse to attempt it, we will normally recommend laser treatment to remove or just fade the tattoo.  Please do not dismiss this out of hand as it is effective, causes little or no scarring and is not as expensive as some people think.  Consultations are often free and a skin test start at £35 and minor treatments start at £50.  Some companies also do discounts if you book a course of sessions.  Try sk:n in Bristol - click here for details.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE?

If you need a cover-up, chances are you've developed your tastes so this time you want to make sure you get it right. So as with a new tattoo, choose the style you like and we can work from there – adapting it to be realistic and to cover well.   Do not come in asking us what will work as we will just throw it right back at you - it's YOUR choice what to wear and there are thousands of options.  You need to have a bit of an idea of what you like and the following examples might help point you in the right direction.

COVER OR RE-WORK?

If you like the existing design but are not happy with some aspect of it, e.g. the colours, line-work, age, or just the way it was done poorly, you could choose to have the tattoo re-worked rather than covered.

This normally involves re-outlining the design (which instantly makes it look fresher and neater) and then colouring either some or all of the remainder. Re-working is normally a little cheaper than a cover-up, but the important thing is that you leave with a tattoo that you are now happy with.

JAPANESE

Traditional Japanese designs are excellent for cover-ups, as they have lots of detail which disguises the lines underneath. Lines hide lines.  They also give you a wide choice of colours so we can choose the ones which will cover best.

They are "flexible" - the design can be twisted and turned and placed where it needs to in order to achieve the cover-up.  For instance, with the koi here we could face it the right way and curve if to cover effectively.  If you tried to do the same thing with a geometric shape, like a star for instance, it would just look wonky. Japanese designs include snakes, dragons, flowers, water, flames, etc. which are all timeless and popular themes.

NATURE DESIGNS

Animals, birds and flowers can often make good covers because of their detail - remember, lines hide lines.  They often include large shaded areas too so we can go dark where we need to in order to cover the old tattoo.  Again, nature designs can be flexible so we can adapt them to put them in the right place and shape for covering.

BLACK AND GREY

Black and grey is not normally an option because the "grey" is actually watered down black ink which is not dense enough to cover anything. It allows too much of the underneath skin to show through.  But sometimes, like here, the original tattoo(s) will be small enough to get away with it as the black areas actually do the covering.

TRIBAL AND CELTIC
Contrary to popular belief, tribal is
not a good choice for cover-ups as it requires open skin underneath so that the black contrasts against your skin. Tribal can sometimes be used if you put a background around it or combine it with other ideas, like flames or splashing water. It can also work if the previous tattoo was very small. A possible technique is to tattoo skin coloured ink into the more faded areas, which almost makes them disappear. The effect is not 100% effective, but it can sometimes fade really old tattoos to the point that you don't really notice it any more.

COLOUR OR BLACK?

You do not need to choose black to cover things, unless the previous tattoo was black.  In fact, most things need to be covered with colour, particularly if you already have colour.  Choose green, blue or purple. Reds, yellows, white and orange are not good covering colours but they can be used sometimes, especially if the tattoo underneath was in those colours. They can also be used in areas of the new tattoo that is not going over old work. This very much depends on what you have to cover - show us what you've got and we make appropriate recommendations for you.

OTHER IDEAS
The ideas listed here are simply suggestions but they give you an idea of what works and what doesn't. Don't be afraid to bring your own design but please be realistic.

COST

Cover-ups do take a little longer than fresh tattoos, so there may be a small surcharge – usually only £5-£10 for a small-medium sized tattoo. Larger cover-ups with be charged at our standard session work rate, currently £60 per hour. If any of the tattoo underneath starts to show through, we can re-touch it, but re-touches must be paid for (min. £20) as your skin will only take a limited amount in one go.
