Recent cover-ups

Tracey's back - the lettering was so small that it had aged poorly, blurring together.  By covering the old tattoo with the branch we made the opportunity to re-do the tattoo clearly but still looking good overall.

Nigel's sleeve - this is a classic cover-up request - bulldogs are probably THE most regretted tattoos for men. The cover works because the focal point - the face - is on clear skin on the chest, allowing us to do a darkish area where the cover-up is.

"Another Nigel"s sleeve - the old tattoos were really blurred and what Nigel chose here was not an easy cover-up to achieve because the individual elements were strong geometric shapes without lots of detail, the opposite of what we recommend.  But we got away with it because they could be pieced together where they needed to go and there was enough space around and between the old tattoos to accommodate the lighter pieces.

Martha's back - the old tattoo was very, very poor.  It was also scarred where the previous artist had gone over the same area too much, probably struggling to get the colour to go in.  I reworked the blackwork, added some delicate shaded "fins" to add another dimension, and covered the blob in the middle with a dark butterly.  It's not 100% but it is a vast improvement.

HEART COVER - this was a very tricky one because there are was already a name covered up by the dark band through the centre. However, by placing the flowers around the band, we could go dark enough to cover the band but still keep the overall look fairly light.

GLYNN'S ARM - the Taz tattoo here is a typical cover-up request, except that Glynn's was even more tricky because of the background to Taz.  To achieve the cover-up, we needed something detailed and coloured, with the main focus points (i.e. the heads of the snake and dragon) on open skin so that the eye is drawn away from the cover-up.  Luckily Glynn was up for a full sleeve, so we had plenty of room to achieve something impressive.

BUTTERFLY COVER-UP - This celtic band had been done way too small, resulting in the lines merging so it's hard to even see that it is a celtic band.  This was a tricky cover-up, but by keeping only the centre of the butterflies and flowers dark, the cover-up worked without going dark overall.

DAVID BOLT COVER-UP - the previous tattoos were far too small, so this customer wanted something more impressive.  In this instance it was possible to do it in black and grey because the existing tattoos were so small.

DONE BY A "MATE" - this is an example of being careful about who you choose to do your tattoo.  This young lady trusted her a friend but the tattoo was poor from day one.  The whole tattoo has to be re-done - lines and colour.  You can see the improvement from going to a professional.   "Mates rates don't pay!"

CAROLYN'S BACK - the old tattoo had blurred to the point that it could not be reworked as we could not see how it was supposed to be, so a cover-up was Carolyn's best option.  She chose a koi, which are great for cover-ups as they have lots of detail.  Even though these are black and bold, they are still quite feminine because of the inclusion of the cherry blossoms.

TINA'S ARM - the dragon design was fine but it has aged badly, so this was an example where a rework was preferable to a cover-up.  Any cover-up would have been bigger and heavier, whereas here we retained the feminine look but it's much fresher.

FIONA'S ARM - this was a tricky one but you can see that the new tattoo works well and is better located on the arm.

ROB'S ARM - this was already a cover-up done by someone else, but the colours were too weak and the face lacked definition.  By darkening the dark areas and lightening the light ones, we created more contrast and now you can clearly see the mask.  This is an example where reworking it was the only option because it was already a cover-up and the skin would not take enough ink for a cover.
