The are several tricks to getting a good portrait tattoo. The photo Firstly the original photograph has to be good quality:
The shading Black and grey generally works better for tattoos as it is easier to get the soft graduation of light and dark. This can be done with colour but it is trickier and takes longer because colour can easily look "cartoony". The shading in the new tattoo wil look very dark - this is deliberate. Black and grey settles much lighter after it's healed so we have to "overdo" the black initially to make sure the tattoo will last. The artist Portraits are a specialism and not all tattooists can take on this sort of work. Look for photos of portraits they have done before. Don't assume everyone can do them. |
